How to safely clamp your knives with the Lansky Controlled-Angle System

Standard clamping instructions
Remove fully tightened clamp from case. Loosen the front screw four full turns with a dime or screwdriver. Using fingers only, tighten rear thumbscrew all the way and then loosen two full turns. Place knife in jaws of clamp. Pinch jaws of clamp with your hand while tightening the front screw. Do not over torque the screw.
Fully tighten rear thumbscrew to lock knife in place. For best results, the gap at the back of the clamp should be equal or slightly greater than the gap near the front jaws of the clamp. Approximately 5/8" of the blade should be exposed from the end of the clamp. If the hone hits the thumbscrew, replace it with the flat head screw provided. For blades approx. 1/2" and under wide, use the notch in the clamp. Position average or oversized blades beyond notch and well into the knife clamp.
Fine finishes and extra grip
If you have a knife that has a fine finish that you’d like to protect, then you can use our Soft-Grip Knife Clamp, or use a piece of masking, painter’s, or electrical tape placed on either side of the blade where the clamp will make contact.
Using tape in this way can also be used to get a bit of extra grip on the knife.
If you have a knife that doesn’t have a flat portion at the spine (opposite the cutting edge) and has a gentle slope from the spine to the edge, then making the gap between the halves of the clamp bigger by an eighth of an inch may allow it to be clamped safely.
Increasing the gap by an eighth of an inch can also be used to get some extra clamping pressure for particularly heavy knives.
Please remember to only use your fingers when tightening the thumbscrew.
Clamping specific designs or sizes
When sharpening a knife with a Tanto tip, the main edge of the knife can be sharpened normally. To do the small edge at the tip, we recommend positioning the clamp so that it runs parallel with that edge with 5/8ths” between the clamp and the edge (see picture).
When sharpening the small edge on a Tanto, we recommend holding the handle of the knife instead of the clamp to ensure that the knife does not move due to the unbalanced weight distribution.
We then recommend sharpening in small sweeps, moving from where the edges meet to the tip of the knife, being careful to keep the hone from rounding either the tip or the point where the 2 edges meet.
When clamping a knife with a thumb hole/notch, we recommend ensuring that the corners of the clamp are not over the hole/notch.
For knives over 7 inches long, we recommend sharpening them in sections of 3-4”. We recommend using a small piece of tape to designate the edges of the section that you’re sharpening to minimize overlap.
Please remember to move the pieces of tape when changing sections so that the edge under the tape gets sharpened.
When sharpening particularly heavy knives, or those with a shape that lessens how well the clamp can hold the blade, we recommend holding the handle of the knife instead of the clamp to ensure that the knife can’t fall.
