Choosing the Right Grit for the Current State of your Knife

When considering which grit to use when sharpening your knife, remember that the higher the grit number the finer. Lower grit numbers are coarser and more aggressive.


For Badly Damaged Knives & Re-profiling Blades:

extra coarse hone.jpgExtra Coarse Hone (70 Grit) –The 70 grit hone lets you reshape and repair heavily chipped and damaged edges.


For Edge Reconditioning:

coarse hone.jpgCoarse Hone (120 Grit) – The coarse hone produces the fastest cutting edge on all types of knives.  It is ideal for sharpening a very dull blade and repairing blemishes or damage to an edge.


For Regular Sharpening & Less Frequent Touch-ups:

medium hone.jpgMedium Hone (280 Grit) - The medium hone works best in conjunction with the coarse hone and fine grit hone. The medium hone is included in every Lansky Sharpening System (excluding the Diamond and Arkansas series).  The medium grit is ideal for smoothing out deep scratches from hard blade use or from an extra-coarse/coarse abrasive hone. 


For Frequent Touch-ups & to polish an Already Sharp Edge:

fine hone.jpgFine Hone (600 Grit) - This Hone works best in conjunction with the series of coarser hones to refine and polish an already sharp edge.  The fine grit is ideal for maintaining an already sharp blade and smoothing out scratches from a medium grit abrasive hone. 


For Polishing a Razor-Sharp Edge:

ultra fine hone.jpgUltra-Fine Hone (1000 Grit) - The 1000 grit ceramic polishing hone lets you achieve a factory-style finish on an already sharpened blade.

Super_Sapphire_Polishing_hone.jpgSuper Sapphire Hone (2000 Grit) – Looking for a mirror polish? The 2000 grit ceramic polishing hone will get you the ultimate, refined finish.  

A leather stropping hone will also result in the keenest edge your blades have seen since they left the factory. Stropping with leather is an age old technique for polishing a blade edge that delivers unparalleled results.

Lansky_leather_Hone.jpgThe Leather Hone is used only on blades that are already extremely sharp. This is the only Lansky Hone that is moved in the opposite direction of all the other hones. Proper stropping instructions included in the packaging.
