I bought this for my bug out bag. I wanted a better option for field use.
Axe, Cold Steel Shovel, ESEE knives...all my field cutlery (and BOB cutlery) is high carbon steel for strength and ease of sharpening. The hockey puck style didn't really work for me, but I've seen it used wonderfully by others.
This allows me to use it with a full-hand grip and be able to balance pressure applied and keep the angle consistent - something I couldn't do with the hockey puck style. It's light and works.

A great tool / hard use knife sharpener.

Instructions

Lawn and Garden Sharpener Instructions:

To use the Lansky Lawn & Garden Tool Sharpener, begin by carefully holding the sharpener with one hand. Since this sharpener does not have a handle, you will have to be very careful not to cut yourself.

Hold the tool that you will be sharpening firmly with the other hand. If you are sharpening a machete, it is good to either clamp the machete to a workbench, or rest the machete along its length, holding the handle for stability. You want to make sure that the blade is supported and does not flex.

Begin sharpening by taking the sharpener, and matching the angle of the sharpener to the edge angle of the tool. Start by pushing the sharpener across the edge of the tool while maintaining a consistent angle and using as much of the sharpener as you can for each stroke. You want to be moving across the blade and using the length of the sharpener simultaneously.

Use moderate pressure. Sharpen one side, then the other, until you see that the edge has become very sharp. Do not worry about the way that the edge looks, since it might look a little rough. The tools you are sharpening are meant for heavy use, and as long as they are sharp, they will work well.

During this process, be extra careful not to slide your fingers across the blade, since it will be very sharp.

Be Smart, Be Safe and Stay an Edge Above the Rest!
